Why does the bronze male resembled the Bengal?
The Bengal that we know today is a cross between the Felis Bengalensis
and the Egyptian Mau.
The Bengal as a breed did not exist before 1980 but originated when Mau
breeder Jane Mills took two 'difficult to find' Felix Bengalensis from
New Delhi zoo (Toby and Taisha) and mated them with Mau's - hoping to
strengthen both the Mau and the Bengal lines.
However all the males from these meetings were sterile for the first
five generations. The net result is that a Mau male had to be used each
time meaning that the first Bengal's had 31 Mau's ancestors to one Felis
Bengalensis. This goes a long way to explain why the Bengals look so
much like Egyptians Mau's.
That said, the lines have diverged since the initial pairings and the
best of the Bengal cats are no longer simply copies of a Mau. Some
lineages even have rosettes.
It should be noted that the resulting offspring were registered as Mau's
by the CFA and as Bengal's by another association's book origins.
One thing we must not forget, is that it's not the Mau that look like a
Bengal that is the Bengal looks like a Mau.
Where I have said Egyptian Mau -- should that be Indian Mau?
